History of RACS
1980 *Organization of Jefferson City Rape and Abuse Crisis Service, Inc. (RACS) intervention hotline by volunteers
1982 *Acceptance as United Way Agency, *First staff member added for volunteer coordination, *Establishment of Victim Advocacy program, *Organization of local “safe homes” in lieu of shelter service
1988 *Addition of licensed professional counselor providing daily individual and weekly group domestic violence counseling for adults, *Added Director of Shelter Services and additional professional staff to enhance case management services
1991 *Major reorganization in staff and volunteer training and upgrading of staff qualifications through continuing education efforts started as a result of long range plan designed to create excellence in providing services, *School based education program added with annual presentations to high school students on abuse prevention and available services
1994 *Addition of Children’s Licensed Professional Counselor. Services are available for child victims of domestic violence and sexual assault as well as weekly sessions for children residents of the shelter.
1996 *Addition of full time court victim advocate program in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Public Safety, Cole County Prosecutor’s Office, Cole County Sheriff and the Jefferson City Police Department.
1997 *Raised in excess of $1.5 million ($550,000 from Mo Dept of Public Safety) for the construction of a new shelter to house 40 clients.
1999 *Moved into new facility. It is located in Jefferson City in a peaceful, wooded setting and can comfortably house 36 residents, not including baby cribs.
2002 *Addition of Outreach Counselor to serve victims in the outlying rural communities
2004 *Tutoring program developed with Jefferson City Public School District for after school help with the children’s homework.
2005 *Celebrating 25 years providing service to victims of domestic and sexual abuse.
2008 * Pet Care program developed with a local veterinarian and a foster care organization.
